The Breakdown
The first step of a catch and sweep is to do a quick side-step to avoid the full contact of their kick. Your hands should still be protecting your head as they fully commit to the kick (in case they choose change kick heights at the last-second). As their kick falls into your trap, your arm should wrap around their leg, squeezing to lock it in.
While you have their leg locked under your arm, you can take the opportunity to step forward, pivot and balance your stance, then sweep their leg before they hop away.
Technique Overview
- Keep your hands nice and high
- Step away from the kick
- Sweep around the leg
- Squeeze forearm with the calf
- Shuffle step forward
- Take out standing leg
