About

Neil Melanson, known in the grappling and Jiu Jitsu communities as The Ground Marshal, is one of the premiere coaches in the industry. He’s played an integral role in guiding numerous athletes like Randy Couture, Chael Sonnen, and Vitor Belfort among many others. Neil’s tactical mindset has been honed over the years as a Navy veteran and former air marshal. He’s been trained in surveillance, operational planning as well as tactical training for neutralizing threats. All that converts to his style of teaching and movements on the mat. Neil has a valuable library of technique videos covering topics like The Snare, Triangle Choke, Switch D’Arce, High Elbow Guillotine, and many more. He’s shared that wealth of knowledge with Hayabusa and is the centerpiece in our Ground Fight Series. Many times you’ll hear him urge students to "Improvise, adapt and overcome" helping them to increase their potential and consistently improve while training.

Neil's
Go To Gear

I love Hayabusa’s equipment. I always have. I think their gear is made for grapplers. It’s made for guys that, like myself, do No-Gi, do MMA. ... Hayabusa compression is durable. I’ve had gear for like 7, 8 years. Still have it, still works. It’s still durable and it doesn’t stink like some other brands when you get it, you wear it for a little bit and you can’t get rid of it. It doesn’t matter how many times you wash it. It stinks. Hayabusa has the best stuff. It’s light, it doesn’t feel like you’re wearing a wetsuit, it's very easy to move around in. You just don’t think about it.
